According to Onet.eu and Merchants Quay Ireland (organisation helping drug addicted and homeless people), number of homeless emigrants from Poland, Lithuania and Latvia is growing rapidly in Dublin. In my opinion the myth of Ireland as a “Promised Land” is still valid, so many people come to Ireland completely unprepared and without money. Having 200 or 300 Euro, without return ticket to Poland, without booked hostel, poor English language, must result in rapid loose of money for B&B, food and attempts to find a job. After couple of weeks some of the new emigrants are broke and end up on the street.
Meanwhile, Onet.eu, according to Agency for Fundamental Rights, mentioned about growing racism tendencies in Western Europe and Ireland. The number of racist attacks in the EU has increased by 20% since year 2000. The highest rise of racial attacks took place in Denmark (by 70%), France (by 62%), Great Britain (by 15%).
The country with the one of the lowest increase of the racist tendencies was Germany (only 2%).
According to Onet.eu and AFR, Ireland is on the 5th place of the most racist countries in European Union:
1. Denmark
2. Slovakia
3. France
4. Scotland
5. Ireland

I have just came up against the article in Saturday’s Irish Independent about a few Franciscan monks who moved into Moyross district of Limerick and set up the Franciscans friary in a 3 council’s houses previously burnt down, probably by gang members. Moyross is a part of Limerick well known from the gang feud. It seems that what was not done by Garda - bringing the safe and peace for that poor part of Limerick with the biggest unemployment rate in the Republic (according to the Irish Independent) - can be done by a few poor, grey habit monks well experienced in working in the poor and full of crime areas. At least they are trying. The Franciscan Friars of Renewal were set tup in 1987 in New York and they are offshoot of the original Franciscan order. According to Irish Independent the new Moyross friary lacks comfort. Monks sleep on the floor, there is no carpets, no TV, radio etc. The seems to be like the medieval Irish monks. We will see if they bring peace and faith to the society where the new Irish goods (drugs and guns) rule. Though I am an agnostic (born as a catholic, but left the church after first communion) I wish them good luck.

Browsing the latest articles on Ireland on one Onet.eu - news portal dedicated for emigrants in Ireland and UK, I have came up against one interesting note. Ireland has a biggest in Europe natural emission of radon, a radioactive gas. It comes from the uranium or granite deposits located in some places in Ireland, but mostly in Wicklow Mountains and south part of county Kildare. Outside of the houses, gas can not do much harm, since it is quickly diffused by the wind and air, but inside the houses radon is called silent killer. Stay in the rooms with high radon concentration is very dangerous and it can cause lungs’ cancer. According to the Irish building regulations all the houses built after 1998 have to be radon proof in the degree equal radon concentration in the area, however it is hard to check all of the houses.
In fact, the high radon concentration in Leinster, especially around Carlow is proven in the most tragic way. New Oak estate in Carlow (behind the Tesco and Fairgreen Shopping Centre) has been the front page story for local newspaper - The Nationalist, due to the very high rate of cancer among the people who live over there. The latest estimates rose that number up to 35 people who had suffered from cancer throughout last decades.

According to Irish Independent and Polish leading internet portal Onet.eu Irish nationals in large numbers are emigrating to Australia to escape from brutal reality of life in a modern society. Majority of the recent Irish emigrants are the high qualified specialists, like builders and constructors, chefs, barbers, doctors and accountants. Australia is currently economically booming, and with its much lower costs of living and lower prices it is much more attractive to many Irish, than the ir homeland. According to the official data of Australian embassy, every month about 700 of Irish is applying for Australian visa.
Meanwhile citizens of new countries of European Union are still coming to Ireland for work, and according to Onet.eu and BDS agency the unofficial number of Lithuanian emigrants reached 120 thousands.

Did you know that in Poland white polar bears walk the streets in the towns and cities? Did you know that we didn’t have electricity, TV and radio during the communist era? Did you know that Poland is a country in Eastern Europe (despite the Europe ends on Ural Mountains in Russia, and Poland lies in the very middle of Europe)? I didn’t know those facts neither. Moreover I probably spend most of my life in country somewhere else
since I haven’t noticed such things. Those stereotypes are quite common in Ireland and Britain. There is another one I have found today.
Today I went to the local (and probably the biggest in town) bookshop, to gain some information about the Polish books available over there. There was only a few books available, unfortunately some cheap 2nd class stories by authors, completely not popular among Polish community. I have asked for some information about the future plans of expanding the offer for Polish readers. There was a Polish girl - shop assistant, who gave me some answers. Unfortunately, there is no any plans for extend the offer. You probably ask why? She asked shop director the same question. Shop director answered her: we won’t sell more Polish books because Polish people don’t read the books.
What is completely stupid and ridiculous is the fact, that her (shop director) assumption was based on the fact, that Polish people don’t buy English books. It seems that she (shop director) can not understand that people outside Ireland or UK speak different language. Her way of thinking and assuming is very simple and limited - if you don’t read in English then you don’t read at all, so there is no point to offer you books in your own language, or at lest to offer you a second class authors and boring stories.
