Will we get rid off tyranny of terrible twins?

Despite of the attempts of present party in rule (Law and Justice) to limit the access of opposition party to the public TV and Radio, and their attempts and doubtful actions of their anti-corruption bureau against the opposition all election polls shows outstanding advantage of leading opposition party Civic Platform over Kaczynski’s far right anti-everything party Law and Justice. The gap varies from 2 - 3% to 17%. Of course our prime minister - Jaroslaw Kaczynski - can not accept the facts and today he publicly accused all of the poll agencies of fabrication the poll results. Of course polls are only polls, but I am hoping that the accuracy of them is about 2 - 3 points maximum. It is possible that finally we - Poles, in Poland, Ireland, UK, Germany will get rid off the tyranny of terrible twins and their henchmen.

It is 5 minutes to election silence, so there are the latest polls according to Onet.pl, WP.pl and Gazeta.

Unfortunately we are still living in a secret police state where every person against terrible twins can be punished quite easy, especially blogers, who are - according to Polish regulations - publishers of newspapers or magazines I prefer to hide the results of the election polls.

MacK, Poland is fairly unique in terms of how brutall wide-ranging the polls are. You left out one worth mentioning - the only agency that got the last election correct - Polska Grupa Badania. Remember that 2 years ago PO were also leading the polls and pop, Poland ended up with the terrible ducks. PGB predicted the correct result last time round. Their last poll before the election has the moderate right-wing Civic Platform (PO) party at 32% and the more right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) party at, ues, also 32%. But it’s not wuite neck and neck - when broken down to seats it goes like this:

PiS would have 170 seats compared to PO’s 168. LiD would get 20% or 96 seats. The far-right LPR and leftist PSL would also just scrape in. Populist left-ish Samoobrona would be grazing on the lawn outside the parliament (Sejm).

170,000 ex-pat Poles worldwide have registered to vote. In 2005 there was 1.4 million eligible voters in Warsaw. Ex-pat votes are counted in Warsaw which means they account for 12% of the total. This could have major impact on ousting the twins from power. According to Rzeczpospolita daily newspaper 51% of those abroad would vote PO, with PiS only getting around 11%. The Left coalition could expect 20% from ex-pats.

Whether PGB are correct again remains to be seen. But don’t get your hopes up for PiS to leave the scene yet. Their voters are far more disciplined than the youth PO are reliant upon. Bad hangovers and shite weather may have a negative impact on PO’s potential electorate.

And even if PiS do get kicked out, PO, though they will be less gung-ho, in my opinion will widen the gap between the rich and poor. Their neo-liberal economic positions are not going to bring greater prosperity to the marginalised in Polish society.

Paddy. If PIS (Law and Justice) fail to win it will be the end of Kaczynski’s leadership, thus end of the PIS in the shape we know. The same works in the case of PO(Civic Platform).

I hope that PO will win since much bigger group of people is encouraged to vote. The last 2 years of Orwell-like state encouraged people enough.

And Paddy, I am neo-liberal. I have see no point in the state that looks after the people to much, and in fact the clerks are looking after themselves. I am for the state limited to the absolutely minimum, the state that gives people freedom of earning money good money, with low labour costs etc.

I used to have my sole - trader business in Poland and for 1 year I was working not for me but for the monster of bureaucracy in Poland, paying them sometimes half sometimes 2/3 of my monthly salary.

Private health care? Why not? If people will be able to earn much better money then they won’t complain on private (non free) health care, becasue nowadays they have to pay under the table…

    ‘Private health care? Why not?’

Have you ever been to the States?

Socialised medicine, once organised for the benefit of all members of society, can be a very good thing indeed.

    ‘low labour costs’

I won’t be going for a job interview in any firm you own.
So it’s a good thing that the Chinks are getting SFA for working long hours to make us our toys and clothes? Or that some Poles are getting exploited by scrupulous employers in Ireland and Britain. What about the ESB case - you think Moneypoint should just say - ‘Lads, you should be happy for the bloody job we’re givin ye, now stop whining!’
