there is litter everywhere

Not so long ago I was dealing with the issue of litter, pollution and contamination of water, and whole Irish environment. I was trying to answer the question about reasons of the fact, that some Irish people are throwing litter everywhere, and don’t care at all about the environment. I think it is an effect of consuming style of life… people spending life in a idle hedonism, thinking probably, we have money, we don’t care.. there is always somebody who will have to clean after us…

Here is some photos of strictly Carlow town centre on Monday morning…. would you like to see that kind of photos in a leaflets and booklets about Ireland?

We’ve found that it’s sometimes the people that the general public think are “respectable” are the ones that are most willing to dump their crap on everyone else.
It’s a sad state of affairs in this country, and we’ve had campaign after campaign since the early 80’s as far as I can remember to clean up our act. It just falls on deaf ears when no one is held accountable for their actions.
I was out pucking up litter one day on our country road and this car passed and they waved at me … and threw a bag of rubbish out the window a hundred yards up the road. I was so furious, and I let it known to them then next time i met them. I also let everyone know what they had done too. I don’t think they were too happy about me doing this … but I was only too happy :)
As with everything else, 95% of the people will do what’s right … and the 5% are making things hard for everyone else.

Fair comment - sadly a sight that is common all over this beautiful Island. I think your analysis is quite salient too. Enjoying this insight into the ‘new Irish’ and your perspectives on the rest of us which are very balanced and fair. Keep posting!

It’s terrible. Unfortunately, it isn’t just Irish people who are doing this. Some immigrants are also guilty.

Yes ,look at all the Polish who drive without car insurance here and when they are caught they abandon the heap of sh.te at the side of the roads all over our country. Then we have the expense of getting ride of them.

Oh :) Yet another clever comment by you ;) You can’t discuss the litter thrown on the streets by Irish students in Carlow (after they left nightclubs they are going to the takeways for food), and illegal rubbish dumping sites, so you are talking about some of us who don’t have an insurance.

Yeah, that’s the very clever way of discussion.

You can always say: we will dump our litter on the streets, becasue you don’t have driving insurance ;)

    Well done mr smart

The truth always hurts. But you people can’t handle the truth.

  9. 9 mackozer

Yes, and you are the finest example of that. You can’t deny the rubbish in Ireland and actually you can’t blame Polish community for that. Moreover you are pissed off because one Pole is pointing it.

ok, you are starting your old song about throwing stons, as you did once on my blog in discussion on Limerick.

actually I could ban you from commenting my posts due to your behaviour of changing nicknames, and actually I am going to do that.

Well…i got many more photos with litter :) After my arriving to Carlow I was wondered about them and I started to photo them, but I get borded of it, and stoped - i wouldn’t have enought storage place for all those photos :)

The Irish Man: have you ever tried to read your own commments? Where is link between car insurances and irresponsible drivers and litter in Ireland?
Ah i know! Irish teens with their pimped cars who have insurances, but have no idea what the safety is?
    Hah - i did it!

Hi MacKozer… just found your site so forgive the late comment. First of all don’t mind that eejit up there! ;-)

My husband is American and has a hard time with the litter too. He asked my Dad about it and my Dad’s theory (right or wrong) is that it dates back to when the country was controlled by the British. It was a way of rebelling against the establishment, a bad habit that has continued since. Don’t know about the truth in that, but it’s a theory.

It’s interesting to compare the little in the North and the Republic… you never see things like that up North!

    Great blog. I’ll be back!

    Hello MacKozer:

I wish I could meet you and give you a NYC Irish girl talking to. You need someone to put you in your place. However wrote about the littering I totally agree, it’s disguisting I don’t care how much money someone has, respect the environment. Hey Mac why don’t you wake up and watch the sunrise, and pick up some litter while your at it.
Live, Love and Laugh life goes by too fast. Jackie

  15. 15 mackozer

Jackie, there was so much litter that I shouldn’t go to work to pick up all of them… and I don’t think so picking one piece would help, since the problem is not with me, but with people who are littering.

90% of illegally dumped domestic rubbish in Kildare is done by Polish people. Why do so many of them in rented accomodation not pay for a refuse collection.
