Halifax (formerly Bank of Scotland) are going to be offering current accounts next month, putting some long-awaited competition into the Irish markets. I suggest you check out the Ask About Money message boards, there's some useful info / conversation there:

I'll be opening an account with them anyway. I'm sick of trying and getting nowhere with the Irish banks.

I've tried nearly bank in Ireland at some point - and unfortunately they're all pretty much the same. A bunch of incompetent idiots who sometimes dont even seem to want your money. Some have sent credit cards and PINs to a neighbours house (and yes my address in their records was correct). Some have cancelled cards for no reason without me asking or being told. Some have tried to charge me double bank charges. And the champion bank would be the one that helpfully increased a work colleagues credit card limit while they were on holiday as the bank had noticed that my colleague had made a few large purchases and were close to maxxing it out. Yes, you guessed it. The credit card had been stolen, and the thief got an extra few thousand euro to spend ...

And then there's the little episode I mentioned to you when we were out on the beer yesterday where I applied to AIB for a debit card, but all I got was a replacement bank card.

I've been with UlsterBank since December 2005 and I'm very happy with their services. Of course they didn't have top-class Internet banking when I joined them and checking credit card balance was rather difficult until a month ago. Today it's still lacking comparing to what I knew from Poland in 2004 but I realize it takes time to get to the top level.
Previously I was with AIB and I totally agree with your opinion: Absolutely Incompetent Bank-staff!

Well... 6 months for Laser it is pretty ridiculous.

In Polish banks you got debit card (Visa electron) almost instantly after setting up account.

In AIB is the same, but I need the bank with good services and qualified and competent bank staff, which AIB has not.

I went with Permanent TSB when I moved to Ireland, they seem to be closest to the UK banks I was with before. And it's free current account banking for all customers, with no "min €500 balance" strings attached.

They also have a branch in Liffey Valley that's open on a Saturday, which has been necessary for me. I had a 6 month-wait for a Laser card, and I applied for a credit card after 8 months I think, and got it easily.

Not sure if they handle foreign bank transfers, I usually just get sterling bank drafts for sending 'home'.
