Dublin it is not only O?ÄôConnell?Äôs Street

Last Saturday I went to Dublin, where I visited some museums ?Äï especially National Museum of Ireland. The archaeological collection is impressive, especially Neolithic long dugout boat made of one long tree trunk, Bronze Age collection of cauldrons and trumpets, and the bog bodies.

Finally I have realized that Dublin centre is not only O?ÄôConnell?Äôs Street. The real city centre lies on the other side of the river, and encompass much larger area together with Temple Bar.

At the evening I also visited Dart peninsula with its marvelous clifs and the lighthouse.

The great wander ?Äï In the church of St Kanisius

Not so far away from Carlow, about 40 minutes by train, beautiful town Cill Chainnigh lies, commonly known in English translation as a Kilkenny. It was my first weekend trip I did about two weeks after my arrival to Ireland, and it was the first sunny day after two weeks.

Irish name of the town comes from the name of the saint Choinnigh who founded a monastery on the hill over the bank of river Nore in 4th century. The only trace of that monastery is of course the tall round tower built about 9th century.

Round towers, as the example in Kilkenny were built during the Viking period, when the hordes of norsemen were plundering the monasteries through out Ireland and Scotland. Those towers were the point of the last resort with a small narrow entrance usually placed about 2 or 3 meters above the surface of the ground. So far I have visited the roundtowers in Kilkenny, Glendaloch, Cashel in Ireland and Brechin in Scotland.

About 13th century on the place of former monastery the cathedral of St. Kanisius was built. In the same century on the surrounding hills and river valley a few abbeys were built ?Äï Black Abbey of Dominican order and Abbey of St. Francis. The Black Abbey was abandoned and ruined, but finally has been regained by the Dominican order. St Francis abbey had not so much luck. It is in ruins surrounded by the Smithwicks brewery, and visitors are not allowed.

The history of the city is very turbulent. During the middle ages the city was divided into English and Irish parts. In the 14th century in Kilkenny were passed a Kilkenny Statutes that prohibited using Irish language and multinational Irish-English marriages. Some centuries later, after the Catholicism became not welcomed in the English kingdom, the catholic English (an Old English as they called themselves) citizens in Ireland changed their minds about their superiority and due to the repressions they faced, became equal to the Irish people. In the year of 1641 both Old English and Irish catholic citizens created a confederation against protestant England. Unfortunately 9 years later the commonly know war criminal Oliver Cromwell with his army and guns put those ideas out of their heads. That was the fall of the city.

Novadays Kilkenny is cozy and beautiful town with its small streets and houses. Of course there is a castle, but it is boring. The former Norman castle was changed to a palace.

Should we be loyal to Polish state - article in the biggest Polish independent newspaper.

Last Monday (19.06.06) the biggest polish independent newspaper ?ÄúGazeta Wyborcza?ÄÌ has published my article, in which I had described Polish emigration in Ireland, issues they faced and bad and good sides of that economical emigration.

My conclusions in brief: because our skills, experience and university degrees obtained in Poland are not properly respected here in Ireland, it is better for young people to leave Poland as soon as they finish high schools. It is better to spent 2 years earning money for studying here in Ireland and then 3 or 4 years in college, than wasting 5 years of studies in Poland (every year a hundred thousands unemployed masters are finishing our Polish universities). Is it good for Poland? It is not for sure, but?Ä? should we be loyal to Poland ?Äï a state that don?Äôt care about its own citizens?
In a couple of days I am going to write more about those issues

The beauty of Irish Horses ?Äï a creature from the past

Apart of the beautiful landscapes we are working on sites among the meadows full of sheep, cows and horses. Ireland is full of horses, a beautiful good looking creatures bred just for a pleasure (I guess) of having a horse, or for rides on a fancy sport carts. I hope that no one is bred for a meat.

Among many slender horses I have found a heavy, furry creature ?Äï a Shire horse. He looks like an ancient ice age animal. This photo I sent to some photographers portals and it got top marks and many very good comments.
